Incursions is an art and research project by Archie Smith and Kitty McKay, initiated in 2019 as a socially engaged walking project, hosting participatory walking forums in the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and beyond.

This site features some of the works and resources generated over the last 4 years. Part CV, part archive, this site documents the film works, audio projects, writing, images and walking forums we’ve undertaken.

Between May 2021 and the end of 2022, Incursions hosted weekly walks in the city. Incursions now hosts a monthly walk with the support of Farrell Centre in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. More details on their website.

Our walking forums operate with an open invitation to think at the pace of walking, with others, in different environments, most commonly the built, urban environment. These walks are not city tours, but offer an open format for collaboration and shared experience. Incursions often attempts to disrupt the ways in which the city is seen as ‘a natural fact’, as something totalising and non-negotiable. Through walking and talking, the attempt is made to demonstrate that the city is contingent and always incomplete; its cracks and slippage points are where we gather, where the light gets in. It is from these anti-objective vantage points we are able to tell different stories about our urban environments.

Incursions aims to create a space for talking about the places where we live, and the ways we are able to identify ourselves and our communities within. We find methods for developing confidence and empowering participants to join together to combat the privatisation and regeneration of the city.
